This waterfall consists of at least three distinct tiers. The first and largest is a segmented plunge over 1000 feet tall. After that, the river flows for about 3/4 of a mile before dropping over another 300-400 foot falls immediately before the river empties into Ringedalsvatnet (Ringedals Lake). Between the two major vertical portions of the falls, the river flows down largely talus cascades and / or stream which normally wouldn't be considered a waterfall, however, it's common for such portions of a stream to be counted when located between two significant vertical drops. While it does appear that the falls have been accurately measured, the figures presented don't add up. The most commonly referenced figure is 2795 feet (852 meters), however, the topographic maps show this to be a physical impossibility. Taking into account the relatively level riverbed between the major parts of the falls, the total drop cannot be over 650 meters. The flow of the river is largely diverted at the top of the falls for the generation of Hydroelectric power. It is not know when, or if the falls flow forcefully anymore. |
