This appears to be a very low volume waterfall, despite the presence of a modest glacier in the basin above the falls. The falls are commonsight along the popular Milford Track, and can be seen across the valley from in the vicinity of the Hirere Shelter. Topo maps show about 420 meters of elevation change, some sources cite 395 meters as the height figure. In the linked photo, Hirere Falls is the shorter waterfall to the right. The taller falls to the left is not named, nor marked on the map. It must be wonderful to live in a region where you can overlook a waterfall that's nearly 2000' tall... |
